Who Should Attend: This course is designed for wastewater & water systems managers, operators and maintainers.

Description: Although scientists do not yet understand fully how hazardous algae blooms (HABs) affect human health, authorities in the United States and abroad are monitoring HABs and developing guidelines for HAB-related public health action. There have been an increasing number of hazardous algae blooms in the northeast forcing the closure of lakes, ponds and impoundments to human and pet contact; (Willand Pond & Stumpfield Marsh). This class is designed to introduce you to a causative agent, cyanobacteria, and their life cycle including the cyanotoxins they can produce. This class includes discussion of the following topics:

  • What are cyanobacteria and their life cycle
  • Hazardous algae blooms (HABs) in the northeast
  • Centers for Disease Controls (CDC) list of cyanotoxins and their health effects
  • The impact of nutrients in the receiving water
  • Operational controls and BMP to reduce nutrient loadings
