Trenching and Excavation: Competent Person Training & Confined Space Awareness

Course#: NEWWTA-466-S-6 & 127-1315-NTA

Date: April 17, 2019

Location: Kennebunk Sewer District - Administrative Office, 44 Water St, Kennebunk, ME

Hours: 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Instructors: Gregory T. Kidd, NEWWTA, Inc.

Credit: Wastewater & Water - 6 TCH

Who Should Attend: This course is designed for anyone working in excavations and confined spaces including wastewater, water, collection systems and distribution systems operators and maintainers.

Description: This training will focus on the primary hazard of trenching and excavation which is employee injury from collapse. Soil analysis is important in order to determine appropriate sloping, benching, and shoring, the role of the competent person in preventing trenches and excavations from collapsing and causing injury or death. Also presented will be the hazards inherent in working in and around confined spaces and the roles of the entry supervisor, attendant, and authorized entrant.

    Topics: The following topics will be presented:

       Trenching & Excavation: Competent Person

  • Case Studies
  • Soil Analysis & classification
  • How excavations collapse
  • Additional hazards include working with heavy machinery; manual handling of materials; working in proximity to traffic; electrical hazards from overhead and underground power-lines; and underground utilities, such as natural gas
  • Appropriate sloping, benching, and shoring
  • Competent Person job duties

       Confined Space Awareness

  • Confined space definition
  • Permit required confined space definition
  • Hazards found in confined spaces
  • Hazardous atmospheres and characteristics
  • Job duties of the Entry Supervisor, Attendant & Authorized Entrant
  • Entry Permit
